Margot Robbie and the art of method dressing

How Margot Robbie and her stylist turn every press tour into a costume, and the looks that prove it.

Most actors dress for the red carpet. Margot Robbie dresses for the film. Together with her long-time stylist Andrew Mukamal, she has made "method dressing" her signature: outfits that echo the character, the era or the mood of the movie she is promoting.

The Barbie effect

The idea went global with the Barbie press tour in 2023, when many of her outfits recreated vintage Barbie dolls almost one to one. Pink suits, gingham and sparkling gowns turned every premiere into a scene from the film, and fans started treating press tours as part of the movie itself.

Old Hollywood for Babylon

For Babylon, a film about 1920s Hollywood, the look went soft and silky. At the Sydney premiere she wore a pale blue satin slip dress with a high slit, the kind of bias-cut glamour that fits the era.

Gothic romance for Wuthering Heights

For Wuthering Heights the palette turned dark and dramatic: deep red velvet and a jewelled choker at the Paris premiere, a nod to the stormy romance of the story.

Before the method

Her earlier red carpets show the style she builds on: clean white dresses, simple lace and minimal jewellery. The polish was always there; method dressing just added a story.

How to steal the idea

You do not need a film to dress with a theme. Pick a mood for an occasion, like a 1920s dinner or a summer wedding, and choose one piece that tells the story. Keep the rest simple so that piece stands out.

The pieces linked above are similar items from the brands listed, not always the exact designs she wore.
