How to dress like Daniel Craig

Six red carpet looks, one rule: fit first, everything else second.

Daniel Craig rarely wears anything loud. What makes his outfits work is fit. Jackets end where the shoulder ends, trousers are cut close without being tight, and the shirt collar sits flat. Once the fit is right, the colours can stay simple.

Start with one great suit

Look at his Skyfall and Montclair premieres: a black suit, a grey check suit, a plain white shirt and a dark tie. Nothing in those outfits is there to get attention, and that is exactly why they look expensive.

Off duty, go softer

Away from black tie he swaps the suit for linen and cotton in cream, tan and light blue, often with an open collar and a pair of strong sunglasses. The sunglasses do most of the talking.

The takeaway

Buy fewer pieces, have them tailored, and keep the palette to navy, grey, cream and white. Add one statement accessory, like sunglasses, a watch or a chain, and stop there.
